Today I was reading in psalms 1 (its one of my favorite chapters in the bible) today verses 1-3 stuck out to me. They say: “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly (doesn’t listen to their counsel), nor stands in the way of sinners ( doesn’t continually do what sinners do), nor sits in the seat of the scornful (does not let his mind relax around sinners). But his delight (his greatest joy) is in the law (and counsel)of the Lord and in his law (and counsel) does he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water (cared for), that brings forth fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither and what ever he does shall prosper.” (parentheses mine)
This is a promise of God to us, his followers, his children! He promises that if you (his born again believing child) don’t listen to the counsel and ideas of the world but your greatest joy is in His counsel and His law. That if you never stop looking for and thinking about and doing his counsel (His Word). That you will be cared for (planted by water), everything His will contains for you to do will be done, every seed you are supposed to plant will be planted, every harvest and good time you are meant to receive will be had (will bring forth fruit in his season). And lastly (but very important to me) there is this promise: Not a single good, God-thing you do will be a waste of time or a failure! Because here He (the maker of the universe) promises that EVERYTHING YOU DO SHALL PROSPER!
Now I know its summer and there’s nothing wrong with having a season of rest in your life, in fact you need that, BUT don’t waste your summer! Get up, get out and DO SOMETHING FOR GOD AND THOSE AROUND YOU! After all the verses we just read did not say, “do nothing and ill make something from that” it said “Whatever you DO shall prosper!” The prospering is Gods part but the doing is your part.
Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying have no time to rest, relax or be alone, I’m just saying, enrich yourself through MORE and MORE time in the word and with God thoughts in your mind. (after all he is better than those flashing lights on that screen in front of you ;)) Don’t slack on increasing your brain power, do something you’ll enjoy so at the end of the summer you can say, “I learned A B and C this summer” it doesn’t have to be boring! if you want to learn how to hunt, learn it! If you want to learn how to play piano, learn it! Also summer is a wonderful time to get more involved at your church than you could during the school year. Join the internship group, volunteer, join the worship team, help out in the nursery! I promise it will enrich you and others.
Now that your all filled up and enriched, go and enrich others (that includes the volunteering and helping at church I just mentioned) but it also includes things like, buying someone a ticket to the movies, inviting over that kid no one seems to like for games or ice cream, inviting all your friends to church, start and blog and publish something encouraging (check ;)) start a book club or a bible study, get a summer job (cleaning your neighbors yard, walking dogs, or fast food ect)
Lastly I like to say this is not a list of must do’s. The best thing you can do this summer might just be to smile, and see God a new way. Enjoy your summer, enrich yourself, enrich others.
